2008 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

The Santa Cruz Championships were held at the Rio Theater. Much thanks to Laurence and his terrific staff for joining with the WBFA staff to put on a terrific contest of events. Photographer Zach Taylor, “I was impressed with the conditioning of the athletes and the ambiance of the theater, made for a great night of photography”.

Thanks always to Geff and Sarah Malone, owners of Max Muscle Santa Cruz and their staff for their sponsorship, support and hospitality. Once again, the Max Muscle girls presented trophies to all class winners and excited the crowd with our traditional Max Muscle t-shirt giveaway extravaganza. Exciting night of competition and a fun time for all.

Highlights of the contest included Men’s Open Overall Champion Brad Gwinn winning his second consecutive WBFA overall title of the year and qualifying the 2009 Team USA and Steve “FireBloat” Franklin, a Fire Captain, from the Santa Cruz area taking time from a busy fire season to perform his last posing routine on stage in front of his home crowd. Showing he still has the muscularity and moves, Steve won the over 60 masters division and men’s open middle weight class division, hopefully we can talk Steve out of retirement to compete in 2009 with Team USA.

Congratulations to first time competitor Sondra Harrison winning overall titles in the women’s bodybuilding division and women’s figure division.

The WBFA held their first contest of the 2008 season on June 14th. The Monterey Bay Championships was held at the Gavilan College Performance Arts Theater in Gilroy, CA for the third year and once again brought out quality athletes displaying symmetry, muscularity and great stage performances.

Highlights of the contest included Novice Men’s Overall Champion Mike Wheeler, who just a week prior to stepping on stage was hospitalized as a result of internal complications, Mike bounced backed and determined to compete at the Monterey Championships, went on to win the Novice Men’s Overall Title and congratulations to Sara Heuston winning overall titles in both the Women’s Open Bodybuilding and Women’s Open Figure Divisions.
